Aethrin — The Veilbound Watcher

Aethrin

A solitary Aethrin standing in a forest as the surrounding environment appears subtly distorted and misaligned

The Aethrin is a solitary forest-dwelling creature whose survival is built entirely upon dark mana and the distortion it brings.

Aethrins are naturally born dark mana users. This affinity is not learned, cultivated, or corrupted into existence — it is intrinsic. Their bodies, minds, and instincts are shaped to sustain dark mana continuously. Maintaining this state consumes nearly everything they have, leaving no capacity for elemental manipulation or physical dominance.

They do not wield fire.

They do not command earth or wind.

Through continuous dark mana circulation, an Aethrin generates hallucinations — not illusions cast outward, but perceptual disruptions imposed inward. Any creature entering its vicinity begins to experience subtle but compounding distortions: distance becomes unreliable, direction loses meaning, and movement no longer aligns with intent.

The hallucinations do not announce themselves.

They feel natural.

Weaker creatures that attempt to attack or prey upon an Aethrin are often the first to fall victim. Once caught within the hallucination field, their perception collapses inward. They may wander endlessly, remain motionless, or repeat the same actions without awareness of time passing.

If such a creature is not awakened externally, it will die — from exhaustion, exposure, starvation, or failure to escape the false reality imposed upon it.

Aethrin shows no mercy.

It does not intervene.

It does not finish the kill.

It allows the distortion to persist.

Stronger predators are not immune, but they are more likely to sense something wrong and retreat before becoming fully ensnared. Those that linger risk losing certainty — and certainty, in this world, is survival.

The presence of an Aethrin is difficult to define. It is not threatening in the way predators are. It does not radiate dominance. Instead, it creates a second presence layered over reality itself — a pressure that makes the forest feel subtly incorrect.

Paths no longer behave as expected.

Sounds arrive displaced.

Instinct hesitates.

And that hesitation is enough.

In a world ruled by force and hunger,

Aethrin endures by ensuring nothing is ever fully real around it.
